Africa (Green Beads)

Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of St. Emygdius, the Patron Saint against Earthquakes, may come to the aid of those affected by the deadly earthquake in Tanzania. May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in Africa.

Disaster: Earthquake  Map of Tanzania Extract from Official: Death toll in Tanzania earthquake rises to 17: “The number of people killed following a rare earthquake in the Lake Victoria region over the weekend has risen to 17, a Tanzanian official said Tuesday. The 5.7-magnitude earthquake also left 252 people injured and 840 families homeless, George Simbachawene, the minister of state in the office of the president, told the National Assembly. People died in collapsing homes. More than 1,200 houses need repair, and the government has closed two secondary schools that were heavily damaged by Saturday’s quake, he said.” See also: 5.7 earthquake hits Tanzania, felt in Kenya and Uganda, Tanzania earthquake kills 11, injures nearly 200.

Saint Emiygdius : Patron Saint against Earthquakes  (Feast Date: August 5) Extract from Saint Emygdius: “His legend states that he was a pagan of Trier who became a Christian. He also converted many to Christianity. He was made a bishop by Pope Marcellus I (or Pope Marcellinus), and sent to Ascoli Piceno. On his way to Ascoli, Emydgius made more conversions, and performed a miracle where he made water gush out of a mountain after striking a cliff.” Saint Emygdius.

Oceania (Blue Beads)

Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of Saint Solange of Bourges, the Patron Saint against Drought, may come to the aid of those affected by the water crisis in West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in Oceania.

Disaster: Water Crisis Map of Indonesia Extract from 800,000 people in W. Nusa Tenggara affected by water crisis: “Four of 10 regencies in West Nusa Tenggara have declared an emergency after two months of water crisis, in which residents have depended on water supplied by trucks from the provincial administration. The four regencies are: Central Lombok, East Lombok and North Lombok on Lombok Island and Bima regency on Sumbawa Island. “The four have issued a water emergency through a decree,” said the head of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Muhammad Rum, in Mataram on Friday. He said the water crisis had been going on for the past two months and its impact had spread wider. For example, he said, the East Lombok regency had recorded that dozens of villages in 12 districts depended on water trucks sent by the BPBD and East Lombok Social Affairs Agency. “Out of 12 districts in East Lombok, seven are experiencing a severe water crisis,” he said. Central Lombok recorded eight districts having a water crisis, four districts in North Lombok and six districts in Bima. Rum said the number of people affected by the crisis in the four regencies had reached 800,000. ”

Saint Solange of Bouges: Patron Saint against Drought (Feast Date: May 10) Extract from St. Solange: “St. Solange was born in Bourges, France, in the mid 9th century. As a deeply religious child, Solange took a vow of chastity at the age of seven. One day about the year 880, while caring for her family flock, Bernard of the Count of Poitiers was captured by her beauty and purity. He made advances but she resisted. Bernard tried to take her by force on his horse but she resisted and fell from the horse. Angered by her resistance, Bernard finished the job that the fall had started with his sword. A Medieval legend has it that St. Solange then rose after being beheaded by her assailant and carried her head in her hands to the Church of St. Martin-du-Cros. In 1281, an altar was erected in her honor in the cemetery of that Church. A field where she used to pray was named after her — ;’The Field of St. Solange.’ Because of the field, St. Solange is called upon as the patron saint of drought relief.” See PICTURE of Saint Solange. Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of Saint Mary, Our Lady of Ransom, the Patron Saint of Spain, may come to the aid of those affected by the derailed train wreck in that country. May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in Europe.

Disaster: Derailed Train  Map of Spain Extract from At least 3 dead as train derails in Spain: authorities: “A train derailed in northwestern Spain on Friday, leaving at least three people dead and several injured, the rail company and regional authorities in Galicia said. The train was travelling from the Galician town of Vigo to the city of Porto in Portugal when the accident happened near the town of O Porrino. Authorities in Galicia said three people were killed in the three-carriage train, which was carrying some 65 people. Footage of the wreck showed one carriage lying on its side, the front of the train completely caved in and mangled. Helicopters and ambulances rushed to the scene to attend to the victims. . . . Pictures posted in local daily La Voz de Galicia showed doctors attending to passengers on the station platform. Ramon Gonzalez, a witness interviewed by Spanish television, said there was a ‘very strong bang.’ ‘It was full of black smoke,’ he said over the phone. ‘It’s a straight line… so this isn’t normal. ‘There are still some injured here but very not serious, the seriously injured were quickly evacuated.’ In a statement, Spain’s railway company Renfe said the train and the driver were both Portuguese, adding that railway traffic had been suspended in the area. Local media said the driver was among the dead, but authorities have yet to confirm this.” See also: Spain train crash leaves 4 dead, dozens injured.

Saint Mary, Our Lady of Ransom: Patroness of Spain (Feast Date: Spetember 24) Extract from : September 24 – Feast of Our Lady of Ransom: “The world goes on its laborious way, proud of its riches, of its power, of its arms, of its genius; the Church goes onward along the course of ages with an even step, trusting in God only, to Whom, day and night, she lifts her eyes and her suppliant hands. Even though in her prudence she neglects not the human aid which Providence and the times afford her, not in these does she put her trust, which rests in prayer, in supplication, in the invocation of God. Thus it is that she renews her vital breath; the diligence of her prayer has caused her, in her aloofness from worldly things and in her continual union with the Divine will, to live the tranquil and peaceful life of Our very Lord Jesus Christ; being herself the image of Christ, whose happy and perpetual joy was hardly marred by the horror of the torments He endured for us. . . .”  See PICTURE of Our Lady of Mercy.  PRAYER for the Feast of Our Lady of Ransom. America (Red Beads)

Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of Saint Sunniva, who was buried by a landslide, may come to the aid of those affected by the mudslide in Guatemala. May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in America.

Disaster: Mudslide Map of Guatemala Extract from 9 dead in Guatemala mudslide: “At least 9 people died after a mudslide ravaged southern Guatemala early Wednesday, according to volunteer firefighters in the municipality of Villa Nueva. A search was underway for a missing child who local authorities fear may have been swept away by the fast-moving mud mass, which was caused by heavy rains. The slide mangled as many as 10 homes in the village of Santa Isabel and left dozens homeless, local officials said. Authorities have declared a state of emergency in the small town, south of the capital of Guatemala City, and have asked residents to evacuate. The government is organizing aid efforts for local residents and is providing shelter, food and water for those in the hardest-hit neighborhoods.” See also: Responses to Disasters in America: Haiti, Chile.

Saint Sunniva (Feast Date: July 8) Extract from Saint Sunniva: “Daughter of a tenth century Irish king. To avoid an arranged marriage with an invading pagan king, she, her brother Alban, and several female companions fled her home only to settle in a cave on the island of Selje, off the Norwegian coast. Sometime later, Viking locals decided that the group was stealing cattle, and sent an armed band to attack them. When they arrived, they found the cave sealed by a landslide; none of the group of exiles was ever seen alive again. Years later, around  995, after reports of strange lights in the area, King Olaf Tryggvason had the cave opened; Sunniva’s body was found incorrupt, and the  king built a church there in her honour.” See picture of Saint Sunniva. Saint Sunniva.

Asia (Yellow Beads)

Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of St. Lawrence of Rome, the Patron Saint against Fire, may come to the aid of those affected by the factory fire in Bangladesh. May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in Asia.

Disaster: Factory Fire Map of Bangladesh  Extract from Search begins after Bangladesh factory fire, death toll rises: “The death toll from a fire at a food and cigarette packaging factory in Bangladesh rose to 29 on Sunday as fire crews began digging through debris, and the number of fatalities could rise with over half a dozen people still missing. Thick plumes of smoke, pockets of fire and a partially collapsed building stalled search efforts, after a blaze that began early on Saturday swept through a factory making packaging material for local and international companies. ‘There are still flames here and there as there are a lot of chemicals in the factory,’ senior fire service official Masudur Rahman told Reuters. Saturday’s blaze was the country’s worst industrial accident since the Rana Plaza building collapse of 2013 that killed 1,135 garment workers, and raises further questions about Bangladesh’s safety record. ‘We do not know when the search will be completed as it is a huge task,’ said Ajit Kumar Bhoumik, a senior fire department official. ‘We need more excavators and trucks to clear debris. We also need more manpower and other resources.’ The cause of the fire in the Tongi industrial zone about 20 km (12 miles) north of the capital, Dhaka, was not immediately known, but officials said a gas line leak and a boiler explosion probably triggered it. The blaze at Tampaco Foils plant broke out just as workers prepared to swap shifts in the early hours of Saturday morning.” See also: Bangladesh factory explosion leaves 15 dead, police say, 12 dead, 16 hurt in explosion and fire at Bangladesh factory.

Saint Lawrence of Rome: Patron Saint against Fire (Feast Date: August 10) Extract from St. Lawrence: “As deacon in Rome, Lawrence was charged with the responsibility for the material goods of the Church, and the distribution of alms to the poor. When Lawrence knew he would be arrested by the prefect and killed like the pope, he sought out the poor, widows and orphans of Rome and gave them all the money he had on hand, selling even the sacred vessels to increase the sum. Lawrence said to the prefect who wanted the wealth of the Church that it was indeed rich. ‘I will show you a valuable part. But give me time to set everything in order and make an inventory.’ After three days he gathered a great number of blind, lame, maimed, leprous, orphaned and widowed persons and put them in rows. When the prefect arrived, Lawrence simply said, ‘These are the treasure of the Church.’ The prefect was so angry he told Lawrence that he would indeed have his wish to die—but it would be by inches. He had a great gridiron prepared, with coals beneath it, and had Lawrence’s body placed on it. After the martyr had suffered the pain for a long time, the legend concludes, he made his famous cheerful remark, ‘It is well done. Turn me over!’”  See pictures of St. Lawrence. ST LAWRENCE.
