General Rosary Intention: That the Father in His Divine Mercy – through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of Mercy, may build up His Kingdom, make these mysteries a reality in our lives, strengthen us in our common mission, and come to the aid of those for whom we pray.

Africa (Green Beads)

Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of St. Norbert of Xanten, Patron Saint of Peace, may come to the aid of those affected by raids and abductions in Ethiopia. May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in Africa.

Disaster: Raids and Abductions Map of Ethiopia Extract from Ethiopia children still missing after cross-border raid: “Dozens of children are still missing after a cross-border raid on villages in the Gambela region of western Ethiopia by South Sudanese tribesmen. Attackers from South Sudan’s Merle tribe killed 208 Ethiopian villagers, abducted 133 children and stole more than 1,000 cattle last month. “Many of those who were killed and the children who were taken were trying to escape,’ one of the surviving villagers, Chawel Chan, told Al Jazeera. ‘They were running across the fields.’ Around 50 of the children have been released after negotiations with the tribesmen by the South Sudanese government but securing the release of the others is proving difficult. The Ehiopian government has already conducted a cross-border military operation to free the remaining children. The government officials said they may conduct further military operations if the abducted children are not released. Ten-year-old Gache Debol was trying to rescue his younger sister when he was taken. His sister is still missing. ‘I thought they were going to kill me,’ he told Al Jazeera. ‘I tried to escape a few times but they caught me and they beat me. I thought I would never see my family again.’” See also: Ethiopia: Troops surround area where 125 children are being held, The search for Ethiopia’s abducted children held in South Sudan.

Saint Norbert of Xanten: Patron Saint of Peace (Feast Date: June 6) Extract from Saint Norbert:  ” The early part of his life was devoted to the world and its pleasures. He entered upon the ecclesiastical state in a worldly spirit. . . . To ensure his success at court, he also had no qualms about accepting holy orders as a canon and whatever financial benefices that came with that position, although he did hesitate at becoming a priest and the implied responsibilities that came with that vocation.  . . high winds pushed and pulled at his fashionable coif, rain slashed at his fancy clothes, and dark roiling clouds pressed night down upon his light thoughts. A sudden flash of lightning split the dark and his horse bucked, throwing Norbert to the ground. For almost an hour, the still form of the courtier lay unmoving. Even the rain soaking his clothes and the howl of thunder did not bring him back to consciousness and life. When he awoke his first words were, ‘Lord, what do you want me to do?’ — the same words Saul spoke on the road to Damascus. In response Norbert heard in his heart, “Turn from evil and do good. Seek peace and pursue it.” See PICTURE of Saint Norbert. St. Norbert.

Oceania (Blue Beads)

Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of St. Brigid of Ireland, the Patron Saint of Travellers, may come to the aid of those affected by the refugee crisis in Australia. May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in Oceania.

Disaster: Refugee Crisis Map of Australia Extract from Australia’s indefinite detention of refugees illegal, UN rules: “Australia’s indefinite detention of refugees on secret security grounds is arbitrary and illegal, the UN has ruled, in the latest of 51 cases – the most of any country – before the human rights committee. The government should offer compensation to those it incarcerated without charge for up to six years, the UN’s human rights committee said in its latest rebuke, which could harm Australia’s ambitions to secure a seat on the powerful UN human rights council. Australia’s Attorney General’s Department declined to comment on the breach of the international covenant on civil and political rights, citing the caretaker conventions in place during the election campaign. The latest adjudication by the UN human rights committee relates to five refugees – one Iranian, three Sri Lankan Tamils and one Afghan Hazara – who were illegally detained between 2009 and 2015 because the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation had made an “adverse security assessment” against each of them. They were recognised as refugees by Australia – “for whom return to their countries of origin was unsafe” the committee said – but were refused visas on security grounds. But they were not allowed to know why they had been deemed security risks, nor were they permitted to see any of the evidence against them, or contest it. As a result, they were held in detention indefinitely, without facing charge or trial, or without any to the courts. Asio later reversed its security assessments against all five refugees and released them to live in the community. All five are still in Australia. Each spent between four and six years in incarceration without charge.” See also:  It’s not just in Greece that refugees are stranded, Australia’s Dutton warns against ‘illiterate’ refugees, Refugees volunteer as firefighters in Australia.

Saint Brigid of Ireland: Patron Saint of Travellers (Feast Date: June 10) Extract from St. Brigid of Ireland: “Brigid is often called the Mary of the Gael. At about 453 AD, a child was born out of wedlock between Dubhtach and one of his Christian slaves named Brocessa. The slave girl was sent to a cabin at the foot of the Cooley Mountains near Dundalk, Co Louth, to have the child. The baby was a healthy girl, which was no great joy to Dubhtach who wanted a son. The mother was sold to a Chieftain in Connaught, and the child was given to a Druid to be raised and educated. In keeping with the life planned for her, she became a vestal virgin in service to the Goddess Brid, and eventually high priestess at the Kil Dara (the temple of the oak), a pagan sanctuary built from the wood of a tree sacred to the Druids. There she and her companions kept a perpetual ritual fire, in honor of Brid. The exact circumstance of her conversion to Christianity are unknown, though it is certain that her Christian mother was a guiding influence. Brigid changed the pagan sanctuary of Kil Dara into a Christian shrine, which gave its name to the present County Kildare. She extinguished the ritual fire of the Druids, and lit a flame dedicated to Christ.” See picture of St. Brigid of IrelandSaint Brigid of Ireland.

Europe

Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of St. Elmo, Patron Saint against Dangers at Sea, may come to the aid of those affected by the refugee crisis in Italy. May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in Europe.

Disaster: Refugee Crisis  Map of Italy Extract from UN: More than 700 refugees feared drowned off Italy: “The UN refugee agency said more than 700 refugees may have drowned in three Mediterranean Sea shipwrecks south of Italy in the last few days. Speaking to Al Jazeera from Geneva, William Spindler, a UNHCR spokesman for Europe, said there had been a spate of incidents in the Mediterranean last week. ‘The first one was Wednesday, which was widely reported. A boat capsised, carrying about 600 people. Some of those people are still missing,’ Spindler said. ‘Then there was a second incident on Thursday and a third one on Friday. In total, we fear that in these three incidents more than 700 people are missing, presumed drowned. ‘There is a number of boats at the moment trying to make their way from Libya to Italy and several rescue operations are ongoing.’ Spindler said more needed to be done to stop refugees from taking to the sea in small boats. ‘It is very difficult to prevent people from doing this. In our view, what needs to be done is to offer legal alternatives to the most vulnerable refugees to travel to Europe. The reason why people are undertaking these dangerous journeys is because they have no choice,’ he said.” See also: European migrant crisis: Shipwrecks ‘kill up to 700 migrants’, Surge of migrant sailings has Italy scrambling to house thousands of new arrivals.

Saint Elmo: Patron Saint against Dangers at Sea (Feast Date: June 2) Extract from  The Golden Legend:  The Life of St. Erasmus: “The holy man, St. Erasmus, was come of noble and of great kindred, and he was not only gentle by his birth but also in deed and conditions. In the time that Diocletian the emperor reigned, which was a great persecutor of Christ’s people, then came this holy man St. Erasmus in the land of Campania, . . ., and there this holy man preached to the people the word of God, and taught unto them the Christian faith, and he baptized them in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Ghost. Then was this holy man chosen and made bishop of all the land of Campania, and preached and taught the people how they should serve God and love him, and avoid sin. See picture of St.Elmo, Novena in Honour of St. Erasmus. Saint Elmo.

America (Red Beads)

Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of St. Juliana Falconieri, Patron Saint of the Sick, may come to the aid of those affected by the Zika virus in the United States. May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in America.

Disaster: Zika Virus Map of America Extract from Number of pregnant women with Zika virus in U.S. triples, CDC says: “The number of pregnant women in the United States reported to have the Zika virus has more than tripled, increasing from 48 to 157, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday. Dr. Margaret Honein, chief of the CDC’s birth defects branch, said the agency is aware of “less than a dozen” babies or fetuses who have suffered the consequences of Zika infection, which can include devastating neurological birth defects. However, she emphasized that most of the 157 pregnancies are ongoing, so it’s not known how many babies will suffer. ‘The CDC’s top priority in the Zika response is protecting pregnant women and their fetuses,’ Honein said. Not a single person is known to have contracted Zika from a mosquito bite in the U.S. They’ve gotten it while traveling to a country where Zika is endemic, or they’ve contracted it sexually from a male partner who’s traveled to one of those areas. Just this week, the CDC’s website reported that there 48 pregnant women with Zika in the U.S. The jump to 157 happened for two reasons. First, more women have become infected over time. Second, the CDC changed its system for reporting cases and now includes women who were infected but didn’t have symptoms. That’s because even when a woman doesn’t have symptoms of Zika, the fetus can still suffer devastating consequences from the virus. The agency reported an additional 122 pregnant women with Zika in the U.S. territories, including Puerto Rico.” See also: Zika virus disease in the United States, 2015–2016, Risk of Zika in the United States May Be Lower Than Anticipated. Saint Juliana Falconieri, Patron Saint of the Sick (Feast Date: June 19) Extract from June 19,–ST. JULIANA FALCONIERI: “JULIANA FALCONIERI Was born in answer to prayer, A.D. 1270. Her father built the splendid church of the Annunziata in Florence, while her uncle, Blessed Alexius, became one of the founders of the Servite Order. Under his care Juliana grew up, as he said, more like an angel than a human being. Such was her modesty that she never used a mirror or gazed upon the face of a man during her whole life. The mere mention of sin made her shudder and tremble, and once hearing, a scandal related she fell into a dead swoon. Her devotion to the sorrows of Our Lady drew her to the Servants of Mary; and, at the age of fourteen, she refused an offer of marriage, and received the habit from St. Philip Benizi himself. Her sanctity attracted many novices, for whose direction she was bidden to draw up a rule, and thus with reluctance she became foundress of the “Mantellate.” She led a life of apostolic charity, converting sinners, reconciling enemies, and healing the sick by sucking with her own lips their ulcerous sores. She was sometimes rapt for whole days in ecstasy, and, her prayers saved. the Servite Order when it was in danger of being suppressed. She was visited in her last hour by angels in the form of white doves, and Jesus Himself, as a beautiful child, crowned her with a garland of flowers.” See picture of St. Juliana Falconieri. Asia (Yellow Beads)

Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of St. Mary, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, may come to the aid of those affected by landslides in Sri Lanka. May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in Asia.

Disaster: Landslides Map of Sri Lanka  Extract from The agony of Sri Lanka’s landslide survivors: “In Siripura, one of three Sri Lankan villages completely buried by a massive landslide a week ago, a grieving Priyanthi Sudeepani, 42, continues to hold on to hope for her son’s return. Yet, most here are aware that no survivors will be found after mudslides ploughed into their villages, killing 101 people and leaving 107 others missing on May 18. N early 2 90,000 Sri Lankans have been affected by floods and landslides since last week. ‘A plane crashed into the mountain, so I thought, and then a ball of fire came tumbling down taking away my entire family,’ a sobbing Sudeepani told Al Jazeera from a relief camp, kilometres away from what was once her village. Inclement weather that triggered the mammoth landslides in three hamlets in central Sri Lanka affected more than 10,500 people. Rendered homeless, they have taken temporary refuge in dozens of relief camps. For villagers such as Sudeepani, the shock of losing homes and all prized possessions in a split second is overshadowed by the reality that their loved ones too are buried beneath. ‘I am waiting with hope, please help me to find them,’ said Sudeepani, hands clasped in a pleading gesture.” See also:  Floods and Landslides in Sri Lanka Leave Dozens Dead, Terror of Sri Lankan Landslides: ‘All I Could Do Was Scream’.

Saint Mary, Our Lady of Perpetual Help (Feast Date: June 27) Extract from Our Lady of Perpetual Help: “The picture of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour is painted on wood, with background of gold. It is Byzantine in style and is supposed to have been painted in the thirteenth century. It represents the Mother of God holding the Divine Child while the Archangels Michael and Gabriel present before Him the instruments of His Passion. . . . It was brought to Rome towards the end of the fifteenth century by a pious merchant, who, dying there, ordered by his will that the picture should be exposed in a church for public veneration. It was exposed in the church of San Matteo, Via Merulana, between Saint Mary Major and Saint John Lateran. Crowds flocked to this church, and for nearly three hundred years many graces were obtained through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin.” See PICTURE of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. A NOVENA to Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Saint Mary, Our Lady of Perpetual Help.
