General Rosary Intention: That the Father in His Divine Mercy – through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of Mercy, may build up His Kingdom, make these mysteries a reality in our lives, strengthen us in our common mission, and come to the aid of those for whom we pray.

Africa (Green Beads)

Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of St. Anthony of Padua, the Patron Saint of Starving People, may come to the aid of those affected by violence and food shortages in South Sudan. May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in Africa.

Disaster: Violent Conflict and Food Shortages Map of South Sudan Extract from Tens of thousands flee fighting in South Sudan: “Tens of thousands of people have fled fighting in northwestern South Sudan between government troops and a newly formed rebel group, as food shortages in the country hit their highest levels in two years. The Medical aid group Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said on Wednesday that nearly 70,000 people have fled their homes in the town of Wau since Friday. About 10,000 of them have taken shelter at a United Nations base in the area, where streams of displaced continue to arrive. ‘We don’t yet know how many people were killed, but dead bodies are still lying in the streets,” said MSF deputy medical coordinator David Kahindi. The government has blamed the violence on a new hardline rebel group that includes former government troops, fighters from the Ugandan-led rebel group the Lord’s Resistance Army and a Sudanese militia known as the Janjaweed. Government spokesman Michael Makuei said Tuesday that the rebel group was being led by Muslim veteran politician Ali Timi Fartak. Fartak has not yet commented on the government’s claims. The United Nations warned on Wednesday that up to 4.8 million people in South Sudan face severe food shortages in the coming months, the highest level since conflict erupted more than two years ago.”

Saint  Anthony of Padua: Patron Saint against Starvation   (Feast Date: June 13) Extract from Saint Anthony of Padua: “Anthony’s wealthy family wanted him to be a great nobleman, but for the sake of Christ he became a poor Franciscan. Priest.   When the remains of Saint Berard and his companions, the first Franciscan martyrs, were brought to be buried in his church, Anthony was moved to leave his order, enter the Friars Minor, and go to Morocco to evangelize. Shipwrecked at Sicily, he joined some other brothers who were going to the church in Portiuncula. Lived in a cave at San Paolo leaving only to attend Mass and sweep the nearby monastery. . . .  he was thereafter constantly travelling, evangelizing, preaching, and teaching theology through Italy and France.  A gifted speaker, he attracted crowds everywhere he went, speaking in multiple tongues; legend says that even the fish loved to listen. Miracle worker.  . . .  Proclaimed a Doctor of the Church on 16 January 1946.” See PICTURE of Saint Anthony of Padua, St. Anthony of Padua PRAYERS, PRAYERS to St. Anthony of Padua. Oceania (Blue Beads)

Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of Saint Scholastica, Patron Saint against Storms ,may come to the aid of those affected by violent storms in Australia. May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in Oceania.

Disaster: Storms Map of Australia Extract from Strong winds rip roofs from homes in Australia: “Winds have ripped the roofs from homes and crushed cars as another storm battered the east coast of Australia. The strong winds hit Mooloolaba on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast on Sunday evening and are believed to have been caused by a tornado. Fortunately there were no reports of injuries, but in the Guardian newspaper, one survivor describes the event as the scariest two minutes of his life. The heaviest downpours hit further south, with some parts of Brisbane reporting up to 180mm of rain. This triggered flooding, with a number of homes inundated and dozens of people needing rescue. Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey told ABC that it was disappointing to still see people driving through floodwater. ‘Only 15 centimetres of water can move your car off the road and I think people don’t realise. It’s not the height of the water, it’s the velocity of the water that gets you into trouble,’ he said. This severe weather comes just two weeks after the last storm battered the east coast. This storm caused major erosion along the coast of New South Wales. . . . Warning are in force for southeast of the state warning of winds gusting up to 100 kph and flash flooding.” See also: Storm surges smash homes in Australia.

Saint Scholastica: Patron Saint against Storms (Feast Dates: February 10) Extract from Scholastica: “Scholastica (c. 480 – 10 February 547) is a saint of the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Churches. Born in Italy, she was the twin sister of St. Benedict of Nursia. . . . Scholastica was dedicated to God from a young age (some tellings of her story indicate that she preceded Benedict in godliness, and he came to holiness after she did). The most commonly told story about her is that she would, once a year, go and visit her brother at a place near his abbey, and they would spend the day worshiping together and discussing sacred texts and issues. One year at the end of the day, they had supper and continued their conversation. When Benedict indicated it was time for him to leave, she protested, and begged him to stay with her for the evening so they could continue their discussions. He refused, insisting that he needed to return to his cell. At that point, Scholastica closed her hands in prayer, and after a moment, a wild storm started outside of the guest house in which they were housed. Benedict asked, ‘What have you done?’, to which she replied, ‘I asked you and you would not listen; so I asked my God and he did listen. So now go off, if you can, leave me and return to your monastery.’ Benedict was unable to return to his monastery, and they spent the night in discussion. According to Gregory’s Dialogues, three days later, from his cell, he saw his sister’s soul leaving the earth and ascending to heaven in the form of a shining white dove.” See PICTURE of Saint Scholastica. Intention –  That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of Saint Elizabeth of Portugal, the Patron Saint of Peace, may come to the aid of those affected by deadly terrorist attacks at Ataturk Airport in Istabul, Turkey. May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in Europe.

Disaster: Terrorist Attacks  Map of Turkey Extract from Istanbul Ataturk airport attack: At least 36 dead and dozens injured: “A gun and bomb attack on Istanbul’s Ataturk international airport has killed 36 people and injured more than 140, officials say. Three attackers opened fire near an entry point to the terminal and blew themselves up after police fired at them, officials say. Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said early signs suggested the so-called Islamic State was behind the attack. Recent bombings have been linked to either IS or Kurdish separatists. Tuesday’s attack looked like a major co-ordinated assault, says the BBC’s Mark Lowen. Ataturk airport was long seen as a vulnerable target, our Turkey correspondent adds, reporting from a plane stuck on the tarmac in Istanbul. There are X-ray scanners at the entrance to the terminal but security checks for cars are limited. Footage shows passengers taking cover inside the airport. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the attack should serve as a turning point in the global fight against militant groups. ‘The bombs that exploded in Istanbul today could have gone off at any airport in any city around the world,’ he said. The US called the attack ‘heinous’, and said saying America remained ‘steadfast in our support for Turkey’”. St. Elizabeth of Portugal: Patron Saint of Peace (Feast Dates: July 4, 5) Extract from: SAINT ELIZABETH Queen of Portugal (1271-1336): “Saint Elizabeth was born in 1271. She was the daughter of Pedro III of Aragon, and named for her aunt, Saint Elizabeth of Hungary. As a child she was holy, and when she was given in marriage to Dennis, King of Portugal, she became a saintly wife. She heard Mass and recited the Divine Office daily, but her devotions were arranged with such prudence that they interfered with none of her duties of state. She prepared for her frequent Communions by works of charity, austerities and fasts, and by her Communions for these heroic works of charity. Elizabeth herself cared for the sick whom she visited, and never did a poor beggar leave her palace without having received what he needed. . . . The patience of Saint Elizabeth and the wonderful sweetness with which she cherished the children even of her rivals, eventually won over the king, and he became a devoted husband and a Christian king. She founded many charitable institutions and religious houses, among others a convent of Poor Clares. . . . The Blessed Virgin appeared to her, accompanied by Saint Clare of Assisi and several other holy women.” Picture of St. Elizabeth of Portugal. July 4 – Prayer to St. Elizabeth of Portugal. America (Red Beads)

Intention –  That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of St. Christopher, the Patron Saint against Floods, may come to the aid of those affected by flooding in West Virginia. May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in America.

Disaster: Flooding Map of West Virginia Extract from   20 dead in West Virginia floods as search and rescue continues: “As a deluge swamped southeast West Virginia — a disaster that killed at least 23 people — Ronnie Scott’s wife called him and told him their house was filling up with water. She fled to the attic with two dogs and a cat and waited. She smelled natural gas. Then, the house blew up. Belinda Scott was able to break a vent and get out onto a porch, then make it onto a tree, which she clung to for hours before being rescued by state police, Ronnie Scott told The Associated Press on Friday. His wife was in the hospital with burns on 67 percent of her body. The pets did not make it out alive. ‘My wife was out there four and a half hours hanging in a tree with a house burning right beside her, floodwaters running all around her,’ said Scott, who was not at the White Sulphur Springs home when the waters rose. Early reports indicate about 9 inches of rain damaged or destroyed more than 100 homes and knocked out power to tens of thousands of others, Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin said. About 500 people were stranded overnight in a shopping center when a bridge washed out, and dozens of other people had to be plucked off rooftops or rescued from their cars. . . . ” See also: Twenty dead in West Virginia in state’s worst floods in a century, West Virginia flood: Stormy morning turns into a nightmare. Saint Christopher (Feast Date: July 25) Extract from July 25: Saint Christopher the Holy Martyr: “One of the most popular legends describes the saint as a tall man of tremendous strength who made a living carrying people across a raging river. One day his passenger was a child who grew so heavy as they crossed the river that he feared they would both drown. Christopher was amazed that one so mighty as himself could be overcome by one so small. The child then revealed that he was Christ, and the heaviness was caused by the weight of the world which he bore. The Greek word Christophoros translates into “bearer of the anointed one, and it is no surprise that he is often depicted as carrying a child, who, in turn, is carrying a globe. Saint Christopher is listed among the “Auxiliary Saints”, or the Fourteen Holy Helpers, venerated for the efficacy of their prayers in time of need.” See PICTURES of Saint Christopher.  PRAYERS to St. Christopher. Asia (Yellow Beads)

Intention – That the Lord Jesus through the intercession of St. Mary, Virgin of Sheshan, the Patron Saint of China, may come to the aid of those affected by tornadoes in Jiangsu. May the Lord help all those affected by man-made and natural disasters in Asia.

Disaster: Tornadoes Map of China Extract from China tornado kills almost 100 people in Jiangsu: “At least 98 people have been killed and 800 others injured in an unusually violent hail storm and tornado that swept across eastern China’s Jiangsu province. Winds of up to 125km an hour struck near Yancheng city, a few hours’ drive north of Shanghai, early Thursday. The extreme weather levelled whole villages, flattened power lines and overturned cars in a city of approximately 7 million residents. Nearly half of those injured are in serious condition, the Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs has said. China’s President Xi Jinping ordered ‘all-out rescue efforts’ in what the country’s official press agency has called one of the worst disasters ever to hit Jiangsu, and one of the worst tornados to hit China in half a century.” See also: Six kindergarten teachers risk their lives to protect 120 children during deadly tornado, China weather: Tornado and hail kill scores in Jiangsu.

Saint Mary, Virgin of Sheshan: Patron Saint of China (Feast Date: May 24)  Extract from “History of the Shrine to Our Lady of Sheshan “Shanghai (Agenzia Fides) – The Shrine dedicated to Our Lady of Sheshan is located in the district of Song Jiang, near the great metropolis of Shang Hai, and is dedicated to Our Lady Help of Christians of Sheshan. In 1863, the then Superior of the Jesuit community in Shanghai purchased the south side of the mountain of Sheshan, that offers a beautiful panorama of bamboo forest. On this site, a retreat house was built for Jesuit Fathers, with a small chapel next door, and the construction of the Shrine began. On March 1, 1868, the then Bishop of Shanghai, Bishop Adrien Languillat, SJ, consecrated the chapel and blessed the image of Our Lady Help of Christians. . . . During the attack of rebels from the Army of Tai Ping, the Superior of the Jesuit community in Shanghai, Fr. Gu Zhen Sheng, went up to the mountain of Sheshan to pray to the Blessed Virgin, saying: “If the diocese is saved from the attack of the rebels, we will build a basilica in thanksgiving for Our Lady’s special protection.” The Diocese was spared from destruction. In September 1870, Fr. Gu made known his invocation to the Blessed Mother and the promise to build a new church in thanksgiving.”   See picture of Our Lady of She-Shan, Prayer to Our Lady of Sheshan, Our Lady of Sheshan.
